American Servers

Each server has its own dedicated forum on the City of Heroes bulletin board. The City of Heroes website has a server status page that displays the current status of all eleven servers, plus the Training Room.

East Coast

The east coast servers are physically located in Virginia. They are:

  • Freedom
  • Infinity
  • Liberty
  • Pinnacle
  • Triumph
  • Victory

West Coast

The west coast servers are physically located in California. They are:

  • Champion
  • Guardian
  • Justice
  • Protector
  • Virtue
  • Training Room

Additional Notes

There is no particular official distinction between these servers, save that some of them are located in an east coast data center and some in a west coast data center. However, the Virtue server has gained a reputation as the "unofficial role-playing server" (that is to say, a server where people try to be predominantly "in-character" as much as possible). Some would also say that Victory is "the unofficial Euro server" because it is believed to have the highest concentration of European players of any of the eleven; Victory has also been called the "unofficial GLBT server" for a similar reason. Victory was also the server where City of Heroes's original beta-testers were able to reserve their character names from the beta-test period. Triumph has the smallest population of all the servers and shares the title of "unofficial friendly server," with Liberty (though naturally this view is subjective). Freedom, in addition to being the most populated American server, holds a special place in the hearts of many beta-testers as this server was actually one of the servers from the beta-test, it was originally named Prime. Virtue, in addition to being the "unofficial" roleplaying server, has become the 2nd most populated American server with the launch of City of Villains.

European Servers

The 4 main European servers are as follows:

  • Union
  • Defiant
  • Zukunft
  • Vigilance

There is no particular official distinction between these servers other than the language (Union & Defiant are English, Zukunft is German and Vigilance is French), however, the Union server has gained a reputation as "the unofficial role-playing server" for Europe (that is to say, a server where people try to be predominantly "in-character" as much as possible). The European servers also have a Training Room, that is mainly in English, though can be swapped to German or French at any time.

Each server has its own dedicated forum on the EU City of Heroes bulletin board. The EU City of Heroes website has its server statuses on the main page.

Test Server (Training Room)

Introduction

The test server is set up specifically for the testing of updates *before* they are incorporated into the game itself. Players can login, preview/test the planned new features, fixes, changes, tweaks and offer up bug reports or suggestions.

How does a test server differ from a “live” server?

Due to the nature and purpose of a test server, the operative word to keep in mind is “temporary.”

  • Content and characters could be wiped at anytime as game specific updates and changes are published, tested and removed.
  • Players can expect lower levels of support, since the bulk of this service is centered around our live servers.
  • Normal bug reporting and petitions will be handled a bit differently, as all issues need to be given more time for in-depth study, review and reproduction.

Installing the Test Server Client

1. Locate the “CohUpdater.exe” file. If you installed the game from the retail cd, this will be in the game directory, which is “C:\Program Files\City of Heroes” by default.

2. Create a shortcut to this file.

3. Open the Properties for the newly created shortcut. In the “Target” window, add the following flag to the end of the line: [space]-test

4. Run this shortcut.

Copying Characters and Playing

Use the Character Copy Tool to transfer your character to the test server.

Use your City of Heroes login name and password to login.

After you login, you will be able to select the server and character you wish to copy to the test server. It will take several moments, but the character will copy. At this point you will be able to play the test server.

NOTE - Those who have just restarted their accounts may experience a delay or wait of up to 24 hours to be able to copy a character to the test server.

After you copy your character to the test server, you should be able to play the test client. Before you can play however, you will have to run the new shortcut you created to the cohupdater. You can copy the shortcut you created to the desktop by dragging and dropping it from the City of Heroes folder to the desktop. You will have to run this shortcut each time you wish to use the test server.
