Stabilized Telephoto Zoom Lenses
- Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS:
- WARNING: there were defects in early production. See Canon's recall notice
- Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 EF IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens - $400, 150cm min focus, standard stabilized zoom lens, 58mm filter size. Autofocus is slow. Sharpness past 200mm is poor. Use the newer 70-300 instead.
- Sigma 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 EX OS APO - As sharp as the Canon 100-400mm, stabilized. Does not work on the Digital Rebel series, but works fine on the 20D. Heavy. Zoom is somewhat stiff. Slow autofocus.

Fast Primes
- Canon Telephoto EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Autofocus Lens - $340, 85cm min focus, 58mm filter size, unstabilized, but sharp, fast and lightweight, making it excellent for portrait shots and decent for flower shots. There is a f/1.2 version of this that is even sharper, but is twice as heavy and four times as expensive. The long minimum focus distance may make it less usable for certain flower shots, and not good for insects. See the 100mm macro lens below.
- Canon Telephoto EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens ([1] Reviews) - $470, 15cm min focus, 58mm filter size, unstabilized, for macro photography. Has some problems with the autofocus (tends to hunt in some situations). At f/2.8, still usable for portrait shots, but is on the far side of my comfortable zoom range on an APS-C body (this is effectively a 160mm equivalent field of view on a 35mm camera).
